In 1980 all four of our Philadelphia sports teams played in their respective sports championships:
*The Phillies beat the Royals to win the World Series while the Eagles lost to the Raiders in the Super Bowl, the Sixers lost to the Lakers in the NBA Finals, and the Flyers lost to the Islanders in the Stanley Cup finals.
Even though we only won one Championship during those 12 months, it was a fun time to be a sports fan in Philly. If that wasn’t enough, there was one team that captivated a whole nation. The USA Hockey team won the Gold Medal in the 1980 Olympics and on Saturday, February 22nd marks the 45th anniversary of the Americans beating the Russians to advance to the Gold Medal game. It was one of the biggest upsets of all time!! David vs Goliath, a true Cinderella story, and announcer Al Michaels captured the moment with his famous call “ Do You Believe in Miracles??? YES!!!
On Saturday we will walk down memory lane and talk with former defenseman Ken Morrow, a member of that unforgettable Gold medal winning team.
The Sixers have now lost their last six games and look lethargic and lost on the court. The Celtics had their way with the Sixers at the Wells Fargo Center, 124-104. The Sixers are 20-25, fifteen games under .500 with 27 games to play in the regular season. It’s safe to say that the Sixers are a bad team and fans have lost their enthusiasm for hopes of a Championship.
The Flyers resume their season Saturday against the Edmonton Oilers at the Wells Fargo Center after the Four Nations Hockey tournament. What a great tournament it was. The USA faced Canada Thursday night in the Championship game and even though the Canadians won 3-2 in overtime, some Flyers got some valuable experience the last several days.
The Philadelphia Phillies start their grapefruit league action on Saturday and it won’t be long before opening day! We will cover all this weekend in The Locker Room with Billy Schweim.
On Saturday’s show, Producer Nick Earnshaw joins me in the studio. We will take a look at the Flyers roster and talk with Flyers Insider Kevin Durso who covers the Orange and Black for 973ESPN.com. Then Mr. Negadelphia P.J. Corda is next brought to you by the Galloway Pool Service. I’m sure P.J. will revert back to being negative after watching the 76ers. Then we will talk with former defensemen on the 1980 Gold Medal winning USA Ice Hockey team, Ken Morrow. Plus we will be giving away Flyers merchandise courtesy of Pro Image Sports and Fan Treasures and you can win when you answer the text board question at 609-403-0973.
On Sunday’s show, my Locker Room youth movement is back: Producer Danny Ryan and "The Intern” Andrew Leeds join me in the studio. We will recap the week in Philly sports. The Phillies are in action against the Orioles on Sunday afternoon and we will get into baseball. Hour Two we will get our “High School Athletes in the Spotlight” with Fran Mclaughlin brought to you by the Philly Pretzel Factory of EHT.
Eagles, Sixers, Flyers talk, and more this weekend in The Locker Room with Billy Schweim, every Saturday and Sunday from 10 am to Noon on 97.3 FM ESPN Radio South Jersey.
